The Courage to Tri: Amy Hafner

“Endurance sports changed the way I treat my body.”   Amy was a dancer her entire life and competed seriously through college as a dance major. The environment was competitive – not only in terms of skill and ability but also in terms of dieting and body shape. Many of the women struggled with eating disorders and it almost was something that was admired.  “It almost showed that you were serious about things. I had a very good friend who was infected with the insidiousness of the message that you should always try to be thinner.” Amy herself began to struggle …

IVF Stories: It’s All Downhill From Here and Other Ambiguous Phrases

The following was written after I experienced three egg retrievals in a row in 2017, with only one embryo recommended for transfer. “It’s all downhill from here”  is a duplicitous phrase. It connotes both easy coasting ahead and some sort of decline. If someone yells it during a run race it’s hard to know whether they mean there are no hills ahead—which they only say if it’s a lie— or a general platitude like “You’re almost there!” It insinuates moving past some sort of peak, whether it’s a huge hill in the middle of a race or limping to the finish line …

The Courage to Tri: Deirdre DeKock

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted one of these, but today I want to share a story from my beautiful friend and fellow athlete Deirdre DeKock. Here she shares her story in her own words, about how triathlon has helped her face obstacles big and small.

Marilia Bocchetto has a successful career as a writer, editor, and producer for CNN. She is also a triathlete, having finished the NYC and Chicago Olympic triathlons as well as other sprint triathlons and running events. She has also had bariatric surgery and lost over 100 lbs in the process so far. In 2014 the producer found herself weighing over 300 lbs. She had always been heavy and weight problems ran in her family. Although she went on various diets and exercised sporadically, she struggled to keep the weight off. But she knew something had to change. From my own …

IVF Stories: Egg retrieval #2 race report

Saturday night was the night before some of the biggest races of the year -Augusta, Chattanooga, Lake Lanier, Berlin and more. I was nervous, tense, and ready to push fast forward on the weekend. It felt like the night before my IRONMAN!   But while many of my athletes and friends from Atlanta Tri Club, Energy Lab, the Scott Rigsby Foundation, etc were tackling their “A” races of the season, I was tackling my own race, egg retrieval round #2!   Lately, I’ve been thinking about how the fertility race actually mimics many of the aspects of prepping for a triathlon. Here …

The Courage to Tri: Kat Gurd

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I’ve had some great interviews these past few weeks for The Courage to Tri. The Courage to Tri is my upcoming book which will be part inspiration and part how- to for women who are interested in crossing their first finish line. The inspiration piece will feature many women in our community who have overcome obstacles and learned things about themselves along their journey.   The lessons these women have to share are too good to use only once so I plan to share some of them on this blog as well.  I certainly did interview some inspiring ladies these past few …
