By bethany Mid- December is when many of us at least attempt to put down the egg-nog and start thinking about getting back in shape for 2014. Getting started anew can be tough for many reasons, but one mental reason is the frustration of comparing yourself with your fitness before before versus now. Getting started again is the hardest part– Good habits lead to success and while it may never be ‘fun’ to wake …

Week 1 Down and SheMoves 5k Race Report

It’s always tough to get started after a long break. This week marked a return to training and the beginning of a swimming focus. As swimming is always in contention to be “my third best sport” I am devoting a f solid period time to working on my weakness. Going from swimming almost zero to six times a week is a tough transition that I’ll be making over the next several weeks. I capped off the end of my first week of training with a fun 5k. Friends Rich and April put on the SheMoves Reindeer Romp 5k,  that I …

QOTW: What should I be doing right now?

By bethany What kind and how much cycling should I be doing right now to make sure I’m ready for the season in 2014? The short and rather unhelpful answer is, it depends. Your training will look very different based on what you have planned for the season. Let’s look at some different situations. and the type of training that’s right for right now. QOTW: Should I use a fan indoors?

By bethany If your goal is to improve your cycling performance through indoor cycling then cooler is better. We think most of our regulars have the …

Back in Business- Destination 2014

This week marked a return to swimming and structured training. If you didn’t grow up swimming and take a long time off, the first time back HURTS!! I amazingly made it through the first three swims with 1-2 more to go for the week. For the last month, I took a pretty substantial break. A few rides at the lab, a few easy dog yogs, and ahem, VERY minimal swimming. I think the official total was < 3k in one month. I needed the break, but that doesn’t mean I don’t experience the same fear that everyone else does. Ie.. …

QOTW: How Do I Get Started Riding on the Trainer?

By bethany After last week’s question about starting cycling in general, we received a question asking for advice geared more towards the practical aspects of riding a trainer for the first time. Although, of course, we wish everyone could join us at the lab and escape the loneliness of basement trainer riding! So perhaps you’ve considered hitting the trainer this winter, but the number of choices, purchases, and general knowledge to be accrued seems daunting. The available options for trainers, workout types, and watches alone can be overwhelming. That’s why the preferred option is usually to join a community which …
