An Invite to Celebrate #TriCourage With Me!

Published by Bethany on

Have you ever heard of the three different types of courage? According to forbes magazine, there are three different types of executive courage. Over the last year, I’ve become enamored with the idea of #trycourage, which eventually morphed into the more endurance-athlete-friendly term #tricourage.

I’ve never been a fan of plays on the word “tri,” but this one was too good to pass up. Courage to Tri is based on the idea of #tricourage, doing something new outside of your comfort zone, and changing your life along the way.

As an adult, life can seem like a list of endless obligations. Taking the steps to cross your first finish line gives you something that’s just for you. It disrupts your routine; it makes you develop habits that support your goal; it makes you strive for more.

Whether you cross your first finish line and immediately sign up for ten races or hang up your bike to focus on other things, take what you’ve gained—energy, discipline, motivation, drive—and carry it with you wherever you go.

When I first discovered triathlon in 2009, I believed that I’d found it. You know, it, it. The thing that I’d be obsessed with forever, the target of all my meandering online searches, the thing I daydreamed about anytime I had a free moment.

Instead, while I still think triathlon is awesome (obviously), I believe it’s true gift is allowing us to tap back into that childhood place where anything is possible, where hard work is play, and where effort is tied directly to reward.

So what is #tricourage, and how can we celebrate it together?

Sometimes it’s easier to talk about what something is NOT!

  • It’s not about looking super hot and glam on insta. In fact, it’s not about “looks” at all. Give me some photos of epic fails and what you learned as a result!
  • It’s not about winning races. In fact, you won’t find any stories about epic race wins or running record miles in the book!
  • It’s not about getting totally obsessed with sports at the expense of the rest of life.

So what is it then?

  • #Tricourage is about leaving your comfort zone, in any area of life. It can be something BIG, like changing your career, or something SMALL, like speaking up when it’s hard.
  • #Tricourage is about putting your story out there for the purpose of helping others find their own way.
  • #Tricourage is about getting out of a rut!

I want to share your examples of #tricourage– in photo and in written form–to share and inspire others. No example is too big or too small!

  • Follow me on insta and use hashtag #tricourage for shares
  • Share your story with us. We want to hear about your journey and the lessons learned along the way.

Hi, I’m Bethany–coach, author of Courage to Tri, 2x Kona qualifier, and twin mom. In a decade of coaching and racing triathlon around the world—from first sprint to IRONMAN Hawaii—I learned a ton about mindset: finding your why, sustaining motivation, overcoming obstacles, and goal setting. Now, I help writers, solopreneurs, and athletes reach their goals using the same process.
