How to stop [endlessly] editing your writing

Published by Bethany on

Today’s writing prompt: edit.⁣

How do you keep from getting stuck in an endless self-editing loop?

Here’s how the loop goes:⁣

  • Throw up some words in a moment of inspiration⁣
  • Realize said words make no sense. Tweak them.⁣
  • Later, realize your message would be so much better if only…⁣
  • Later-later, reread and wonder what the heck inspired you to put down those words in the first place. ⁣
  • Start over

⁣How can you break the editing cycle?

This is the trick that works for me. Throw up the words and put them out there after only ONE instance of the loop. Yes, there there will be typos. There will be those who wonder about my IQ or sobriety. The worst is when they tell you about it, but that’s a story for another day. ⁣

Then later, unless said word-barf takes place on twitter or live national television, you can edit! ⁣

If you try it, let me know how it goes.⁣
