Super Quick Reviews of 14 Favorite Triathlon/Run Races

It’s time to start signing up for 2014 races if you haven’t already gotten trigger happy! Here are my (very brief) reviews on 14 races I did in 2013… pros, any cons, and whether I would consider them again. Race #1 Charles Harris 10k Best race for setting a 10k PR My Review- This race is a really fast 10k. If you like gentle grades and super fast downhills then you might set a PR that’s tough to break. Also, this race is very competitive and attracts a lot of local fasties. If you care about place instead of time …

Getting Started with Cycling for Beginners

By bethany I received a note from a fellow runner who is injured and unable to run. He asked for advice on the best way to start cycling with the goal of getting just getting in some exercise while he rehabs for running. I replied that even though he didn’t want to invest a lot of time or complications with getting started, I thought he might be better served by considering attaching a more concrete goal to his pursuit. There are several reasons why and I think they apply to starting any new exercise program. If you’re new to training, …

Kona 2013 NBC Broadcast- How Was It?

I thought it was the best coverage I have seen to date. I’m pretty sure I’m a qualified critic, since I have watched several of the Kona videos dozens of times. It’s because we play them at Energy Lab during class until we are asked to retire that year. It would be nice to have more coverage of the pros and top age groupers, but that is clearly the opinion of someone who is totally immersed in the sport.  My take is generally that if there were no celebrity and special interest stories, then it wouldn’t be interesting enough for non-triathletes …

You Think Runners are Annoying? Enter Triathletes…

By now everyone has seen the Wall Street Journal post about the guy who doesn’t understand running and thinks all runners are just a bunch of bragasauras rexes. Personally, I think Chad has some great points. And something to add.. he thinks runners are annoying, he has NO idea. Wait till he gets some triathletes in town! Here are some of the ideas in his article and relevant quotes, followed by a triathlete’s perspective. 1.  Those car stickers are really annoying “There is one kind of bumper sticker I see almost daily here in my small Midwestern town: a small …

IRONMAN Florida: The rest of the story

It’s time for the rest of the story. The short version is that things did not go as planned. The longer version begins with the bike below.. For the dirty details, I’ll continue on with the bike.I jumped on the bike and got going. I felt pretty crappy after the swim,  and was having symptoms of drinking excess sea water… bloating, dizziness, and just generally feeling terrible. Also, my power meter stopped working and adding to my frustration, I didn’t realize it at first.  It was strange to be pushing at what felt like my Ironman watts, and not be …
